Outsourcing Core Competencies

For decades, companies have struggled to define their core competencies and then translate them into what needs to be kept in-house and what can be outsourced.
The focus of their efforts is now changing, driven by a confluence of technology advances, a better understanding of business processes and the overriding need to cut costs. And while outsourcing is being initiated at different levels within companies, almost all of it has to be dealt with at some level by the CIO.
Forbes caught up with John Lutz, general manager of IBM's managed business process services, to talk about what's changed.
